National Trails Day
Saturday, June 2, is National Trails Day, a nationwide trails celebration that encourages outdoor enthusiasts to give some appreciation and sweat equity back to their favorite footpaths. Created by the American Hiking Association, the annual hiker holiday includes trail work projects, educational exhibits, trail dedications, gear demonstrations, and instructional workshops across the country. For the 3rd consecutive year, Sky Meadows State Park, in partnership with Blue Ridge Mountain Sports, will be holding a local National Trails Day event from 9:00 AM until 3:00 PM. Activities will include: trail maintenance & clean up and a special Hiking 101 presentation.
WHERE : Please bring clippers, swing blades, rakes and gloves. Wear appropriate clothing & footwear including; long pants, long sleeved shirts, and work/hiking boots are suggested. All volunteers will receive free lunch, water, and energy bars. This is a great volunteer opportunity. Great American Backyard Campout
Come take part in the Great American Backyard Campout at Sky Meadows State Park. Once a year, we open the Historic Mount Bleak backyard to campers; don't miss this unique opportunity! Celebrate nature and the great outdoors for 24 hours. Activities will begin at Noon on Saturday and run until noon on Sunday. The park's rangers will be on hand to help you set up your campsite & tent. Other activities will include: Kids Crafts, Leave No Trace classes, GPS workshops, and live animal presentations. Learn about hiking and backpacking at the Outdoor Skills Station sponsored by Blue Ridge Mountain Sports. For information and registration fees, call 540-592-3556.
